GOTTHARD

BASE TUNNEL

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is,

with a length of 57.09 kilometres (35.47 mi)

and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels,

shafts and passages, the longest railway tunnel in the world. 

​

The railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland was opened on 1 June 2016.

Drilling operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a breakthrough ceremony and in the western tunnel on 23 March 2011.

DIE-SEIN had the chance to be part of this huge century project

in commission with ELKUCH BATOR.

​

This company were responsible for all gate and door concepts of the entire tunnel project. I had the chance to photograph in the tunnel during summer 2009, even before the breakthrough came.

At 34 degrees and a dusty environment we have been up to 16 times in the tunnel during these 8 years. Partly up to 14 hours per day. The helpfulness of colleagues and tunnel builders is unequaled.
