The Gotthard Base Tunnel is, with a length of 57.09 kilometres (35.47 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, the longest railway tunnel in the world.
The railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland was opened on 1 June 2016.
Drilling operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a breakthrough ceremony broadcast live on Swiss TV and in the western tunnel on 23 March 2011.
DIE-SEIN had the chance to be part of this huge century project in commission with ELKUCH BATOR.
This company were responsible for all gate and door concepts of the entire tunnel project. I had the chance to photograph in the tunnel during summer 2009, even before the breakthrough came.
At 34 degrees and a dusty environment we have been up to 16 times in the tunnel during these 8 years. Partly up to 14 hours per day. The helpfulness of colleagues and tunnel builders is unequaled.
We are proud that we were part of this world century construction project.
Thank you to all the tunnel buddies.
Thank you St. Barbara.
